It is a popular trait at the start of a new year, in this case a new decade, to “take stock” of our lives. In particular, we think of all the things we should have addressed but haven’t and make New Year resolutions, which are usually all too quickly forgotten or ignored. In many cases we decide on further reflection that we like the way things are and everything is generally hunky dory.
However, all too often there are issues that need tackling but we either don’t want to face up to them just yet or are not sure how to go about resolving them.

Have you made a Will? If not, now is the time to make proper provision for your family. If you have made a Will in the past, does it adequately address your current circumstances?
Have you considered the need for a Power of Attorney?  How many families do you know who did not take this simple step and are now suffering the problems of trying to assist elderly relatives who are no longer capable of managing their own affairs. They will be faced with endless red tape and bureaucracy. We recommend that you take advice now on granting a Continuing (Financial) and Welfare Power of Attorney in favour of younger family members. This can be written in such a way that it does not take legal effect until some time in the future when you may lose the ability to look after yourself. A simple step like this will save your family a lot of anguish in years to come.
